4/30 Topics and groups were assigned today....they are off to a fantastic start. I can't wait to see their final presentations next week! Rubrics will be given out and explained tomorrow :-)
4/24 Next Monday students will work on an in-class project on a standard not yet or partially covered this year. They will research information on their topic and create a power point and poster to teach the class. We did an activity similar to this at the beginning of the year and they did a fantastic job (and several have asked if we're going to get to do another one)! So, by popular demand, once again the students are going to get to teach each other in a fun & engaging way. Guidelines and rubric will be given out on Monday as well. I am so excited to see what they come up with!!!
4/16 Even though the Milestones are over, we will continue covering standards we only had a chance to touch base with due to time constraints. Students would like to discuss the Holocaust a little more in depth, the Cold War, Vietnam and other more current historical events (up to 1975). We will also be doing a fun, interactive Earth Day activity called “polluting the Chattahoochee” where I read aloud a story about how people pollute the river, and as their character is described, they will come up and dump the contents of their cup into a large clear bowl (represents the river). After the story is read, they can see how humans take a large part in pollution. Hopefully this will lead into good conversations about recycling and being earth-friendly.
3/12 We will begin discussing important people, places and causes of WWII before our in-house field trip from the KSU Holocaust center nest Tuesday. Please see below for details. Please review the two WWII Brain Pop videos in the 2/25 post before then!
3/3 I am excited to announce that we will have an in-house field trip on Tuesday, March 20th. The KSU Museum of History and Holocaust Education Center will be discussing & demonstrating events of WWII. The best part about it is that it's all FREE!! We will begin discussing causes of WWII before they come to Big Shanty so they will have some background knowledge.

1/29 We will continue with causes of WWI this week and tying in the economics portion (rationing, drafting soldiers, women and children joining the workforce, etc...). We will complete a vocab/timeline activity of the causes, so students will have it all in their notebooks to use a study guide. I will let you know when the first quiz will be (definitely not this week, since we will be focusing more on science).

12/16 We will finish our unit on Reconstruction when we return and begin events leading up to WWI. Mrs. Schager has a cool lesson for the students on trench warfare that we will be working on shortly after we return.
12/3 See notes below for social studies standards...we will be working on social studies for the remainder of the time before the holiday break.
11/26 We will continue discussing the Industrial Revolution and how the many inventions made our world a better place to live (economy, communication, transportation, businesses, etc...).
Mrs. Borg and I will both be doing activities since there is so much material to cover. We will also be close reading a passage on the The Dust Bowl and explain in depth how it affected the lives of so many people in the Panhandle. We will do an in-class activity where each group will present their idea to the class while the audience asks questions and takes notes.

10/1 Our Civil War unit test will be Tuesday, October 3rd. Students will be allowed to use their booklets we worked on in class before break. They will not be allowed to borrow one, so please make sure they have it with them on Monday (they were asked to put in in their Berenger folder to keep it safe) :-) I am going to have the students review them and add any missing information before Tuesday's test.
We will then move right into US Citizenship, rights and responsibilities and the Constitution (these standards are different than what I originally planned before break; they flow much better with what we've been discussing in class (after reconstruction period):

9/5-9/21 Here are the standards we will be working on after fall break. We will finish our current unit until "Civil War Day" on Friday, September 22nd. Students will have the opportunity to visit every 5th grade classroom to hear and see all the different events that occurred during the Civil War. They will also be able to dress as if they were part of that era. You can Google pictures of what they wore if you'd like....her a few ideas I found to get you thinking:

8/26 Civi War Battle projects have been completed. Mrs. Schager and Mrs. Geraci graciously offered to let the students display their work for a few weeks in the media center. I really enjoyed all the posters, power points and videos...thanks for working so hard, fifth grade! We will finish up the unit this week (taking notes and watching a few brief Civil War videos), then they will be allowed to use their information booklets they complete during class on the final test. If your child is absent, please encourage them to get their notes from another student or come get mine. The test will tentatively be next Tuesday after Labor Day.
8/20 I cannot wait to see all of the students' Civil War Battle projects this week. I will give a few extra minutes Tuesday for the groups to get together to finalize their presentations since many children will be out tomorrow, then we'll jump right into presenting. They have really been working hard the past two weeks. I'm sure they are going "WOW" me! Thursday we will begin discussing and taking notes on the causes of the Civil War. I will link the power point to this blog once we get started, so if anyone is absent or gets behind, they can bring home their notebook and finish their work. I will pass out a study guide at the end of next week which will contain everything they will need to know for the unit test (TBD after notes have been completed). :-)
8/13 I am so proud of how hard the students are working on their Civil War projects. I think I am just as excited as they are about these! I signed out the lap top cart for Monday and Tuesday this week, so there will be plenty of technology to go around. We will begin presenting on Tuesday, August 22nd (the day after the solar eclipse).....I can't wait :-)
I will be assigning the Civil War chapter to read this week in class. If they do not have time to complete it, they can take the textbook home and record this as their 20 minutes of reading time in their agendas.

8/7 We will begin discussing the causes of the Civil War next week and I will give out the rubric for our first project; Famous Battles of the Civil War. They will work on the Battle projects mainly in class, so if your child has a device they can do research on, please have them bring it to class......thank you!!! The projects will be due Monday, August 21st. A newsletter for this unit will be coming home next Thursday.
I will also assign a SS Eagle Eye sometime next week that will be due on Friday, August 25th. It's on Unit 3, chapter 5 (pp.134-171), causes of the Civil War in their SS textbooks. Instead of giving the students a list of questions to look up and answer, this allows them more flexibility and creativity. Time will be given in class for the students to read the chapter and work on the questions. This assignment will be taken for a grade.

We will also continue to work on activities for Immigration Day, March 10th. I will send home a quick 4-question assignment on Monday about your child's country of origin, family name, etc....to help us prepare for it. Thanks in advance for your help!
2/5 We are finishing up our scavenger hunt unit test tomorrow. I will try to have those graded and returned by Thursday. This week we will begin discussions on Immigration and Ellis Island. We will view an interactive tour so the students can get a better idea of what it looked like and what the immigrants went through during that time period. They will watch a brain pop video and answer questions during our rotation time. I will also be sending home a question page with your child so they will know where they came from and have some idea of their family background before we complete their information sheet needed on Immigration Day (which will be on Friday, March 10th). Information will be sent home this week & I will show the student more pictures so they will have a better idea of what they can wear.

1/27 Update...... The classes have been uploading their pictures and posters to SeeSaw to use as review for the next test. I have decided to create a scavenger hunt test in lieu of a larger, unit test (we will start this next Wed. in our guided rotations) I am attaching two power points for students to use for this activity. They have all worked so hard on these presentations and teaching their lessons to the class, we might as well put them to good use!

1/20 Presentations will begin tomorrow...what an amazing job they've been doing to prepare for them! Since our projector bulb is on order, we still have no way of viewing videos, PPT's, flip charts, etc. Therefore, I am going to see if we can move our presentations into the learning commons on Monday to finish them up.
I will assign the reading pages and next Eagle Eye for immigration and WWI once the presentations have been completed. We will be up to that time period after our inventions/inventors group goes.

Hopefully we can record them on SeeSaw for all to view.
1/10 The next non-fiction Eagle Eye will be assigned in two weeks once the science is turned in. It will cover Immigration, WWI and the roaring 20's. I will list the specific pages once I see how far we get with our in-class presentations this week and next.
1/6 Students will be working in groups the next few weeks to create a way to present these standards to the rest of the class. Each group will be given specific standards/information/vocabulary to research and teach to the class using some type of technology, as well as create an anchor chart we can hang in the class to use as study guides. I will also record these for SEESAW so the students can view them at home, take notes and use as a study tool for upcoming quizzes and/or tests. Once the groups' topics are given, they may do research at home as well.

12/3 Due to the Chorus fileld trip and Mr. McAllister's lesson on critical thinking, I've moved the Civil War test to Monday, 12/5. We will review some questions before the test, but please encourage your child to STUDY the map and the study guide. The Jeopardy game we played was VERY smilar to what they will be tested on, and seemed to really know the information!
We will continue with Reconstruction until the break.
We will continue with Reconstruction until the break.
11/27 We will be finishing up our Civil War unit this week. The final test will be Friday, 12/2. The class will receive a study guide tomorrow and we will highlight everything they need to know for the test. We will play a review game on Thursday to help us prepare!
11/13 WOW, WOW, WOW IS ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT THEIR CIVIL WAR BATTLE PROJECTS!!!! I am so proud of how hard each and every student worked on these projects; the research, the designing, the typing and the technology they used is astounding! Several kids even went above and beyond to do an extra trailer, monument and/or poster. I fully enjoyed watching and listening to ALL of them. Thank you, parents, for helping and going out to get the materials......we couldn't do this without you!
Our next project will be in science well after Christmas break.....designing plant and animal cells (more info to come)!
*We will finish up our Civil War unit the week we return from Thanksgiving break. I will let you know in advance when the final test will be. I have a detailed study guide coming home this week. We will do a great deal of review and play Civil War Jeopardy to get prepared!

11/7.......Finish up those Battle Projects on your day off; they are due on Wednesday. I can't wait to see them!
10/31 Civil War Battle projects due Wednesday, November 9th. If students are ready sooner, they are welcome to present. We will continue working on Civil War causes and North vs. South this week. We will be going out to the blacktop where the map of the US is painted & use it to label the Union, Confederate and Border states.
10/24 We will continue working on causes and Battles of the Civil War this week. The students are doing an excellent job on their project ideas. I can't wait to see the final products. Projects will be due Wed., November 9th, the day after Election Day. Mrs. Borg and I are giving them the afternoon on Thursday after Civil War rotations, to work with their partner/team. I have signed out both laptop carts if your child has not signed up for BYOD. Hope you're getting your outfit ready for Thursday...I'm going to be a completely different person!

10/14 We began discussing the causes of the Civil War today (small groups were given 2 causes each to research and present on chart paper to the class). We will finish this next week, as well as work on the Battle projects. I haven't given a due date yet; I would like to see how far we get in class next week. If your child has a device they can do research on, please have them bring it to class......thank you!!!I will also assign the next SS Eagle on Monday that will be due next Friday. It's on Unit 3, chapter 5 (pp.134-171), causes of the Civil War and if completed in its entirety, will be worth 2 non-fiction points.
9/28 We are starting our Civil War unit soon! I will be assigning another project, but this time they have a choice of a video or iMovie trailer, a skit, a poster, a model or a Prezi....sorry, no Power points this time. I will give them time in class to choose a partner or a group and a battle from the Civil War in which they will research and create their project around. They will basically "pull from a hat so to speak", so we can cover all the battles and learn LOTS of great information needed to cover the standards. This will take a while, so I'm not setting a due date just yet. I'll keep you informed as we move further into the unit. Project will be given out & explained on Monday.

9/21 We will finish up with government after break and have an assessment the second week of October. I will send home a study guide after the break and we will play a Jeopardy review game.
9/10 Wow, I am so impressed with the students' Bill of Rights projects. The Power points, Prezis, videos and posters were so creative! It was a great visual to help the class remember the 10 Bill of Rights. I'm already planning our next one! Stay tuned for more information. Next week we will begin government and complete an Eagle Eye on this information. Students will be allowed to bring the SS text home if they don't finish by Thursday.
9/6 The students will be completing the Due Process writing assignment with Mrs. Borg this week. If they do not complete it in class, they will be able to bring it home to complete and proofread. Thank you, Mrs. Borg, for taking this one on.....not enough hours in the day to get it all done!
BILL OF RIGHTS PROJECTS ARE DUE TOMORROW....I can't wait to see them! Please see the rubric below and use it as a checklist to complete the project. I groups this week, we will be working on another Eagle Eye for the government chapter in our Social Studies textbooks. These will not be due until next Friday, September 16th.

8/26 See Due Process PPT below. The class will use this to answer two responses. The students must use correct terminology, capitalization, punctuation and grammar. It will be due by Friday and taken as a social studies grade. Continue to work on the Bill of Rights Project that is due Wednesday, Sept. 7th. Ask them what amendment they have chosen to research. See attached rubric:
This week we are focusing on the Bill of Rights (five freedoms in the first amendment) and specific vocabulary in all 10 (petition, bear arms, assembly, search & seizure, etc.), due process and the amendment process. I've uploaded the power point and a link in case they need extra help. We will have an open note quiz on all of the above on Thursday or Friday.
Bill of Righs:

8/14 Since this is a science week, I will integrate social studies into their guided groups. They will create a mini booklet on the Bill of Rights (match the "right" with its correct illustration). The will also be given a bookmark with all 10 Bill Rights listed; they are required to KNOW them this year, so they will be assessed sometime next week (check your child's agenda daily for more information).
8/7 In our first unit students will explore the freedoms, rights and responsibilities of being a United States citizen. They will examine the beliefs and ideals behind the Bill of Rights and learn to differentiate between a right and a responsibility. They will also learn that there are two ways that amendments can be ratified (only one is used in the US).
Some Essential questions we will answer in the next two weeks:
How is the U.S. Government run?
What are the rights and responsibilities of United States citizens?
How have the amendments to the U.S. Constitution maintained a representative democracy?
What is the purpose of each branch in our government?
What is the meaning of the Latin word, E Pluribus Unum?
This is a great unit to begin with since our presidential election is coming up!

We will continue learning and reviewing the Bill of Rights. This is a very abstract idea for the students and anything you can do to talk to them about the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or the Federal and State government would be great! We will have our test on the Bill of Rights on Friday and we will start talking about the War of 1812. The power point for the Bill of Rights is linked below.
