4/15/18: We are going to start working on book reports, hopefully this week, depends on our testing schedule and the time we have with students. I asked the students several weeks ago to be working on a book that they can finish around the end of the month. This week I will discuss the options they have for completing a book report. I originally was going to have them all make green screen book reports, but giving the students a choice allows they to express their creativity, which in turn creates motivation! They will have class time to work on the project, but will have the option to work on it at home. We will also be doing some research on career choices. They will need to research and read up on a career choice and that will be extended to writing about the career. We are planning a great 5th grade wall that will display the student holding a chalkboard with their career choice displayed. This wall will be located across from the entrance to the Café and feature all 5th graders. This is also part of our Comcast cares project! We will also work on a business plan for our Garden Gala project.....selling slime for a legacy project. We will work together to develop the business plan, make the slime, sell the slime, and decide on a Legacy Project that we can leave for Big Shanty from them. We have a lot happening!
3/19/18: We will continue to work on nonfiction texts and collecting information from the texts. We are using information about different dog breeds, so the students are engaged! Students were given there vocabulary words and study guide today. The test will be next Tuesday 27th. We will also be reviewing main idea and theme this week.
3/12/18: We finished up tone and mood today. Ask your student about the creepy Lion King video we watched! This week we will be working on pulling information out of nonfiction texts. On our last pretest data, this area seemed to be problematic for the students. We will have our vocabulary test tomorrow, 3/12/18.
3/4/18: We will finish up POV this week and the POV postcard that they are creating by Tuesday. We will then move on to tone and mood. We have some great activities involving the movie The Lion King! Students will receive their study guide for their vocabulary words. The test will be March13th. Make sure they continue reading and expanding their vocabulary and thinking while reading.
2/25/18:
We will continue to learn about figurative language and more important how to recognize it within books. It is easy identified when singled out, now how can we identify it within books we are reading? We will also discuss point of view this week and how to identify 1st, 3rd, 3rd omniscient and limited. The students are able to access Brainpop through Mackinvia and watch a great video about point of view (P.O.V.). We will practice both of these standards within writing also! On a side note, please continue to read. I can tell the students that are doing their reading every night and those that are not. This is such an important way to boost reading comprehension!

In reading we are going to start focusing on how to compare and contrast two texts. This is a common assessment on the Milestones and it will be great to have some strategies to use! Students will also continue reading in their "pleasure" books and completing assignments on commas and point of view. Vocabulary words will be distributed on Monday. Not everyone will have the same words. The vocabulary test will be next Tuesday the 13th.

Well, this has been an interesting week. Needless to say, we will continue working on how to support what we are doing in writing with a claim and evidence. IF we have school on Friday, the students will be given their new vocabulary words. I'll announce a date for the test later. I hope everyone is reading over the snow days!

We will be finishing up our book study this week! The overall test on Homer P. Figg will be on Thursday, the 16th. Their folder will also be due that day with all of our activities within the folder. If it is all there, they will get two bonus points on their test.
We will also have a reading comprehension test on the Social Studies Weekly Newspaper we have been reading. That will be on Wednesday. They will be allowed to have the newspaper with them during the test, so nothing to study for, just remember strategies of how to locate information.
We will have vocabulary words this week, but the test date will be determined.

9/18/17: I sent out a Remind text about the Vocab test and students should have it written in their agenda over a week ago, it will be on the 19th instead of the 20th. I had a typo in my other blog post.
Thanks!
Thanks!
9/13/17:
We will continue our book study this week. We have vocabulary words that are from our book, chapters 1-5. The test will be on 9/19/17. There are only a handful of words and the students worked on an activity sheet today that will help them with the definitions. We will analyze chapters 1-5 with some summarizing and prediction activities this week also. Students are working on reading with the purpose of writing so that they read with deeper meaning. I explained this by asking them if they had ever read anything and then realized they had no idea what they just read. I know I have! Several students are a little behind in their work so we will use the testing days as "catch up" days and move on next week.

FINALLY! We can start our book study! I'm very excited to get started reading this book. If you look on the left side of this website you will see a BOOK STUDY page. Click on that for some information about our book. I also started a Flipgrid. This a program that let's you respond to questions verbally. This does record the students in video format, so if you are not comfortable with that please discuss it with your students. I will talk to them this week about appropriate responses. If they don't respond on the Flipgrid, then they will have the opportunity to do so on our Seesaw account.
This week we will be investing the author of The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg and completing a webquest about him and the book.

This week in Reading we will be starting vocabulary and our "Vocabulary in Action" (VIA) program. I will provide the definitions this week, but I eventually move them to looking up their own definitions. The words are all based on Greek or Latin roots. The test will be on 8/22/17. We will also talk about how to pick a good book, and how they should ALWAYS have an independent reading book with them. We will also talk about strategies for comprehension when reading a book. Lastly, we will be reading a Social Studies Weekly Newspaper on the Civil War. I think I have changed my mind on letting them take books home from my classroom. I am going to make them sign the books out, but please make sure they are treated with respect and they find their way back to the classroom. Thanks!

We will be learning about Genres of literature. This is especially helpful since our Learning Commons is now organized by genre. We will also continue to review the procedures for reading workshop and what my expectations will be.
Please don't forget to either bring in $5.00 for the book study we will be doing on The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg. If they already have the book please send it in! This is a great book to go along with the Civil War Standards. We will be exploring the vocabulary, connections, comparing characters and plot design. I would like to start with the book on 8/14/17.

In reading we have been reviewing many things that we have learned this year. We did an ESCAPE the CLASSROOM activity with point of view, figurative language, symbolism, and comprehension. The students really seemed to enjoy that activity! We also talked about tone, mood, and beauty of visual and written pieces. Ask your student about the Lion King videos!! We will continue to review and get ready for the Milestones over the next couple of weeks. We will be doing a lot of reading activities within Social Studies standards over the next several weeks covering The Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression.

We are going to be working on gathering information from nonfiction articles this week. It will mainly focus on immigration and a Social Studies Weekly newspaper and look at some political cartoons, this will help them have a deeper understanding of the immigration simulation that is coming up! We will also have another debate Friday! We have been learning how to respond to questions after reading articles and last week we had a debate on two topics:
1. Do pro athletes get paid too much?
2. Should kids have homework?
It was fun to see the students really feel passionate about a subject! They had to read the article, summarize it, and then respond to and answer the question with supporting evidence. This activity really helps with reading and writing. I wonder what the topic will be this week????

Our book of knowledge is growing with information that we are learning from our daily article reading! This week we will be reading about composers. Vocabulary words this week will still be focusing on Greek and Latin roots. The students are responsible for looking up the words. I give them time to do this in class and then show the definitions so they can make sure they have the right one. Part of our standards are that the students know how to use a dictionary or other resources and doing this gives them practice on this standard.

We will be starting a warm up activity in Reading called "Read an Article a Day", "RAD". The students will be given an article to read on different topics and they will write 2-3 things they learned in their Reading Notebook, or "Book of Knowledge". This should only take 10 minutes or so and then we will move onto our lesson for the day.
We will be conferencing on books and getting back in the groove of reading and developing a love of reading!
We will also be taking our Reading Inventory this week, which will determine Lexile levels.

10/10/16:
In reading this week we are working on nonfiction books and summarizing them. We will be using a Social Studies Weekly newspaper on the Civil War to practice. Vocab words are a little different this week. I am starting to incorporate endings, suffixes, and prefixes. The students should have the words written done and they looked up the definitions. They will also need to know what the endings mean (I gave them a cheat sheet).

This week we have been working on constructing responses to questions using the RACE response. Ask your student what RACE stands for, if they can answer you, buy them an ice cream cone!! They have all done really well with it and now we will expect that on any assignments. We will be starting to work on nonfiction by the end of this week and I will ask that they have several nonfiction books they can keep in the room. They can get them at the Learning Commons or bring them in from home.

I hope you all had a lovely long weekend! This week in reading we started on online portfolios my introducing our books. I stapled the parent information in the agenda so you can access your student's video. They were really excited and did a great job. We will be working on citing evidence from texts this week and look for more videos and work on the Seesaw app. If you have any questions about it, please email me.

We will be working on citing evidence from texts this week and look for more videos and work on the Seesaw app. If you have any questions about it, please email me.

I gave the students the words and the definitions, they will not have to spell the words. I am attaching the words for this week with the definitions. VOCAB LIST
As a disclaimer: I will not always attach the list as the year goes on and if a student loses their list they are responsible for getting the definitions. I also had the students write the words in their agenda. Later in the year, they will be looking up the definitions.

In reading this week we will be working on visualization while reading a book. They will complete the activities using the book they are reading in class. At the end of the week we will start talking about compare and contrasting two pieces of literature.
Next week I want all the students to have a nonfiction book in order to complete their assignment. We will be going to the media center tomorrow or they can bring one from home.
I also assigned a FICTION book report that is due on March 28th. I have attached the instructions and rubric. They will need a file folder in order to complete the project. If you do not have one or can't get one, let me know and I will supply them one.

Week of February 8th:
The students are continuing to think about the themes of the books they are reading. We are comparing those themes to other student's books and seeing how they are the same or different. We will be starting a nonfiction unit after break, so be thinking about what kind of nonfiction book your student might be interested in. I have to take a trip to the book store this weekend to pick up some much requested books! I am really enjoying meeting with your student one on one and having a book talk! This week I am going to ask them to think about their book and draw a picture of how they visualize a setting or character in the book. What evidence in the book makes them think it looks that way?

Week of February 1st:
We are finishing up our book study words on Monday and Tuesday and then we will continue to read our selected books and work on identifying the theme of the book. We will compare the themes of everyone's books and talk about the similar ideas, like good vs evil and quests. The students seem to be enjoying their books and I am getting to meet one on one with them at lease once a week, sometimes more.
